Enhancing Security & Privacy at Auckland Airport with Visiontron’s Custom Panel System
Auckland International Airport (AUK), New Zealand’s largest and busiest airport, serves as the country’s primary gateway for international travel. Located in the suburb of Māngere, about 13 miles south of Auckland’s city center, the airport handles millions of passengers annually, 21 million in 2019 alone, connecting New Zealand to destinations around the world. To enhance both privacy and security at the international terminal’s departure screening hall—a critical point in the travel process—the airport sought an effective solution to streamline operations while maintaining a smooth passenger experience.
With passengers queueing directly behind customs officers, sensitive information was exposed on screens, and the officers themselves faced potential security risks. The airport needed a discreet yet effective barrier to improve operational security while maintaining a professional, open terminal environment.
Through a trusted Visiontron reseller, we provided a custom post and panel system that seamlessly fit into the airport’s existing infrastructure while allowing for future relocation when needed.

The Challenge
Auckland Airport’s security team identified three major concerns:
- Lack of Privacy & Security – Officers were positioned with their backs to passengers, exposing sensitive customs inspection processes and creating a potential safety risk.
- Preferred a Fixed Anchor Method for Installation – The airport had pre-installed socket mounts for other stanchions and hoped we could offer a similar method of installation, while also ensuring the necessary height and stability for a 6’ tall barrier.
- Future Relocation Considerations – The customs area is expected to move in a few years, meaning the solution needs to be easily reinstalled in a new location without costly or time-consuming modifications.
The Solution
Visiontron designed a post and panel barrier system that integrated seamlessly into Auckland Airport’s infrastructure while delivering the privacy, durability, and flexibility they required.
Custom Q-Panels with Secure, Small Footprint Post Mounting
- Our Heavy Duty Q-Panels were engineered for optimal height to block passenger views of officer screens while maintaining an open, welcoming terminal space. Customs officers now have a protected workspace, shielding sensitive information from travelers and adding a layer of safety against potential aggressors.
- Maximum frame width: 48”, ensuring compliance with airport space requirements.
Adaptable Installation with 300 Series Retractable Belt Stanchions equipped with MINI-SOCKET® Base Mounts
- Visiontron’s MINI-SOCKET® Base Mounts were paired with our Premium 300 Series RETRACTA-BELT® Stanchions to create a sturdy installation with minimal modifications required to the airport area itself. By eliminating traditional bases, the base footprint was significantly reduced—from a 14 inch diameter down to just 2.5 inches, the width of the post itself. This not only saved floorspace but minimized potential tripping hazards.
Future-Proofing for Impending Relocation Plans
- To accommodate future relocation, our Q-PANELS® can be relocated as needed, by simply unscrewing the posts from the socket and installing new MINI-SOCKETS® at the new location.
